Everyone has a BBQ that they want us to go to or a couch to crash on and it's great, but sometimes it's like crazy. We got told there was a really bad storm in Denver last night. This girl was just trying to get us to stay at her house. One time, this guy and his wife offered us a BBQ, a game of pool and a fuck. They were full swingers and they were really old like 40 or something. (LAUGHTER). DP-Would we admit? We wouldn't do that with a girl that mattered. We have all been friends for so long, since we were kids. It makes it easier when we are touring together - cause we have been together for so long. We have known each other since elementary school. DP-(LAUGHTER) - Quasi-Noodle?????? (Lots of laughter on this one and they all pointed to Jonny).
DP - (LAUGHTER) One that actually works? Or one that has worked on us? Ummm.....do you need a place to stay tonight? There's a bad storm coming in - you better stay the night at my house! Want to come over for a BBQ? Thanks again to the guys for their fabulous interview!
The girls from BackstageDirt had a chance to sit down with the boys from Dirty Penny backstage at Bender's to discuss the release of their new album, "Young and Reckless" and their current tour. The boys were entertaining, as always, and happily "Did the Dirt" interview!
Before we begin, we do want to pay tribute to Dirty Penny's opening band, Angels and Bullets. They seriously KICK ASS! The singer, A~Ray, channeling, Janis Joplin/Taime Downe, is a force to be reckoned with. Check out these cats as they play the Denver music scene. We hope to see a lot more of them.

What follows is our interview with Dirty Penny:

BSD-"Take it Sleazy" was influenced and co-written with Johnny Lima and now this latest album is solely done by DP – how is this album different? Did you feel that you were confident enough as artists to tackle this album all on your own?
DP - We did work with Johnny Lima on this album, and he did produce it. So he was definitely there - he was less part of the writing process, but still a producer in that aspect. So we still had him there. The songs are a lot about life experiences and fun stories and us just writing about shit.
BSD - Who does most of the writing? Do you all do it as a collaborative effort?
DP - We all do. Lyrically, it's usually like someone will bring a theme of a song and a chorus to the table, then we all work together and it just happens.
BSD-The song "Dead at 16" was obviously influenced by some serious situations. Did any of you truly feel like you might be Dead at 16?
DP - That song is written about life experiences that we have had and other people's lives that we have seen and it became a mixture. Dead at 16 is about as "preachy" as Dirty Penny gets.
What about 25? Maybe by 30?
DP - (Laughter) - Spanky replied to this one, "Who knows? "I'll be the first one to die anyway -The drummer is always the first to go".

BSD-Another song that really is catching is "If I were you, I’d hate me too?" Do you guys feel like there are any big artists or influential people that do HATE you?
DP - (Laughter)- Wherever we go and whenever we walk into a place, we get eyeballed - just because of the way that we look. They don't even know us, they haven't said one word to us and they have an opinion - based soley on what we look like. Looking at it from their perspective...If I were you I'd probably hate me too... It's kind of like sticking your tongue out at society. Screw you, this is what I do and I'm sorry you do what you do and are miserable. We have dealt with this since the first Rocklahoma, it's been about 50/50 of cool fuckin' people that treat you like a person and people that have a little resentment and think they are better and maybe they are jealous - or it's whatever they are fuckin' going through. We're just doing what they did like fuckin' 10-15 years ago, trying to come up when you don't have everything yet and for some reason they treat you like shit. We can't wait to treat younger bands like shit....(laughter) just kiddin'.
BSD-It is awesome to hear that you are jumping out on a headlining tour with Vains of Jenna, who happen to sound quite similar to you. How do you guys stand out and stay unique? Do you think the similarities could hurt DP?
DP-We are different enough to where it is like how Crue and Guns N Roses are lumped together - but they are not the same at all. Like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, and you say they're like the same band. If you do know the music and you get to know the personalities of the two bands and that makes them even better and you know who is who as far as being different. With the new album out, it's very different from the first and our stage show is very different and we feel like we are playing with a really cool mix of bands and it's only gonna work with this style of music. Other band's fans will see us and might think we are sick and our fans might see them for the first time and think these guys are sick too. We'll just share fans (laughter). Obviously some are gonna like us more and some are gonna like the band that they are used to seeing but we hope that this gives us a chance to grow our fan base.

BSD-Where are you as musicians? How do you keep it going? Obviously the total package is part of the deal, do you think that your looks and party antics have influenced how you are accepted by music fans?
DP-(Laughter) Well we don't think that our looks are really the only thing we have to hang on to. Our show speaks for itself but we feel fuckin' good about what we are doing.
BSD-When comparing you all today to when you first came on the music scene, looking like you just stepped off of the Sunset Strip, you have definitely toned your look down. Are you boys growing up? Can we always expect the same balls out, glam slam, in your face rock with these changes and the new album?

DP - So what are you talking about as far as when we first came out?
BSD - Well your first CD was released when you stepped onto the scene at Rocklahoma and you definitely looked a lot different then. More glam and flashy.
DP - We have toned down - we did look more like Motley Crue in the early days, but we don't want to get stuck there. We are on the road and it is hard to keep up with it. We drive a lot, try to sleep and show up and play. When we are on tour, we may not have showered for a couple of days (laughter) so we just look the way we do.
BSD-Do you have any pre-show rituals? Superstition?
DP-We always warm-up lyrically before the show together. Play on our iphones and just relax before the show.
BSD-What does Dirty Penny really need right now?
DP-Right now - maybe a few shots. (Laughter). Jack Daniels (Binge & Spanky), Vodka (Ty) and Jameson (Jonny). (laughter). What do we need in the big picture? Jump on a big mainstream tour and be exposed to more fans. We would love to be part of the Warped Tour or something kick ass like that.
BSD-Who is a really cool band or musician that you like to tour with?
DP-We haven't really done any big tours. We've done everything pretty much solo. We liked LA Guns-Robbie Crane and Stephen Pearcy from Ratt are pretty fuckin cool. Joe Leste from Bang Tango rocks. Taime Downe from Faster Pussycat is cool.
BSD-What is the craziest thing a groupie has done to get your attention?
BSD - Like 40 is so damn old??
DP - No - that's not old (laughter). They might have been like 35.
BSD - By the way - we heard you have some "Cougar" fans from Denver that love them some Dirty Penny?
DP - (LAUGHTER) Yea, and they are coming here tonight!!!!
DP - Another fuckin' funny story - was when this girl pissed on the front of our van, shit that was here in Denver. This girl put her ass on the front of the van, dropped her pants and pissed. Wait I have a picture of it (LAUGHTER). (The boys then proceeded to show BSD the picture-the visual was fabulous!! Way to go groupie!) It was fuckin' funny! Girls are crazy - they've asked us "would you mind sharing me with my friend"? and we of course reply, I'm down with that. (LAUGHTER)
BSD-Any chance any of you would admit to stealing a girl from
one another?
BSD-Who has the biggest love gun in the band?
BSD-Best pickup line?
