Juliette Lewis –The Fox Theatre – Boulder, CO
October 6, 2009
Prior to descending to Boulder for the Juliette Lewis show, we were a bit disappointed that our interview with her was not going to happen. Apparently, Ms. Lewis is exhausted due to the current tour, which is rounding down to two weeks and counting. She has also been heavily involved in the release of “Whip It”, Drew Barrymore’s latest amazing creation in which Juliette plays the resident badass on the roller derby scene. Resident BADASS she is - in RockNRoll. Despite our disappointment of not getting to chat with her, we were thrilled that we were able to cover this show.
BSD arrived in Boulder to take in the scene, which really needs to be taken in by everyone. Boulder in the fall is amazing. Bacaro was our choice for dining, which is a pre-show ritual for us girls….us girls gotta eat right?! Geared up for the show, we showed up at The Fox to hear the opening bands, “The American Bangs” and the “Ettes”. Both great bands – unique sound and enthusiastic stage presence. If time allows, we always try to take in the opener! Gotta show them some love too! We were glad that we did. Check them both out at:

With the show about to begin, we did get to enjoy what we seem to always refer to as “prime-time people watching”. Wow – what a diverse crowd. The BSD girls made many friends – quite a few of them female – and we don’t think on accident! Let’s just say the female to male ratio was quite low. We encountered some interesting characters, one that kept offering us “gum”. Her manner was such that we are assuming she was not concerned that we might be offending others with some halitosis that was not under control. We think this “gum” we were offered may have had magical powers and subliminal ingredients. Twenty years too late, “gum girl”, sorry! She did sport a nice bedazzled and studded Juliette Lewis hoodie, so she did have SOME sense right?
Now back to the show…..Juliette takes the stage with theatrics that you would expect from her. Gone are the days of bohemian style and strange choices of cornrows and designer gowns. She is smokin’ – rockin’ hot in pleather pants with red stitching, red and black feather jacket and headpiece, and a hot top that showed off her amazing body – obviously not invaded by Hollywood. Her face is glammed up like she was about to take the stage with Motley Crue during the Theatre of Pain days. Scarves flowing from her belt loops and even sporting Nikki Sixx’s signature dashes under her eyes – with a unique color twist of red – to match her feathers……HOT! HOT! HOT!!!
As far as the amount of people at the show, it is quite disappointing that nine years after first hitting the scene as a rock n’ roller, Ms. Lewis still doesn’t draw as large of a crowd as she should. This is so even though she’s uber famous for being an actress and mega talented as a performer, singer and songwriter. Jared Leto, lead singer of the band “Thirty Seconds to Mars”, hasn’t had as much of a problem, as the last time we saw them play, they almost sold out The Fillmore, which is 5 times the size of The Fox Theatre. So, we have to ask the question of why why why aren’t more people coming to her shows? Maybe she needs better marketing? Even better, maybe Juliette should go on tour with “Thirty Seconds to Mars”. Juliette and her amazing band deserve more people at their shows.
We are all about a great stage show and we got what we were looking for! Juliette’s set list included an array of songs -our favorites were “Pray” and “Sticky”. “Purgatory” “Terra Incognita” and “Fantasy Bar” were also amazing. Shit, the whole set was phenomenal. The only disappointment in the set list was that she didn’t sing any of her songs from the movie “Strange Days.” We were hoping to catch a live performance of “I Can Hardly Wait” (written for the movie by PJ Harvey). Juliette definitely takes the stage seriously – by the end of the show she is a hot mess with strong vocals right to the end. We decided last night that we enjoy her music much more live. Isn’t it usually the other way around? We think as a vocalist, she has some serious talent and does not need any studio or enhancement tricks to make her sound better – the girl can sing! Juliette is quite inspiring with all of her talent – movies galore and now making a quintessential mark on rocknroll. Makes us girls want to start a band!!!! Goes to prove the theory - Don’t we all just want to be rock stars??? Catch some Juliette if you can!
