“I Thought I Told you that I loved you…….sharpie girl?”
– a nice little chat with Papa Roach!
October 26, 2009
PAPA ROACH – OGDEN THEATRE-Denver, CO
Special guests – Jett, Kill Hannah & Aranda
Can your Monday get any better when you know you are going to see one of your favorite bands that night? Well yes it can, when you know that before the show you will have a chance to meet and chat a bit with one of the best bands around. Pretty darn close to Christmas morning if you ask us!
Well, the beginning of our PR journey did not quite start on the right foot, but the end definitely justified the means…..but let me back up a bit. On the ride to show we were almost interrupted by an idiot driver who nearly wiped us off the road….that was fun. This was followed up by being pulled over by Denver’s finest - right around the corner from the Ogden (and we were running late as it was). Luckily the kind officer decided not to give the BSD girls a ticket, but he did give us a business card, low and behold his name was “Officer Roach”, no joke. We took this as a sign of only good things to come…right? We were Right!!! The “full roach effect” was in place.
We got there just in time to hear the band’s sound check, which was awesome. The stage was being assembled in the freezing cold Ogden as Papa Roach warmed things up with their impeccable instruments including the unique vocals of Jacoby. We were lucky to hear State of Emergency and Time is Running Out (which was not going to be included in the evening’s set list), throughout which Jacoby did some fun vocal stuff with Low Rider…saying “All….my friends… drive in hoopties” (Which I highly doubt). Fun times with PR. They spent the next few minutes meeting with some meet and greeters that were also there and let me say…..these people are truly fans of the band. One girl was so excited that she is planning on getting her sharpie autograph from Jacoby permanently etched into her skin – now that is RockNroll!! I also saw that one of their fans made them a scrapbook, which they were all reading and passing around after we chatted with them!! What nice boys! J
The BSD girls were super thrilled to meet the band, which unless your head has been stuck under a rock you know them as: Jacoby Shaddix, Jerry Horton, Tobin Esperance and Tony Palermo. The guys were gathered around the bar, which we were sooo wishing was open (it is quite nerve-racking to not have at least one cocktail under your belt before you meet a band like Papa Roach). Introductions were great; Tony immediately reached out with a firm handshake and introduced himself - like we don’t already know his name! Next was a nice hug by Tobin – refusing to shake hands and jumping right into hugs is fine with us… which changed the entire vibe to near heart-attack zone for this BSD girl - when a hug was given by Jacoby and finally Jerry! SIGH……….. Where was I? Oh yes, we congratulated the guys on the success of their most recently released CD, Metamorphosis, and expressed our excitement that they were finally doing this headlining tour (IT’S ABOUT TIME) and the fact that Denver was included. We told them about “Officer Roach” pulling us over and passed his business card onto them…they thought this was “funny shit”. In response, Jacoby says “you girls are in for the full Roach Effect – after tonight, it WILL be in full effect” We wanted to get down to business with these guys, but it was amazing how quickly we were able to connect and just talk with them like we would any random person who shares the same passion and love for their music. They loved the name Backstagedirt.com, which sort of derailed our questions and turned our chat into “dirt-y talk” in seconds. Jacoby was certain that our next question was going to be our famous love gun question eloquently put “so do you want to know which one of us has a big dick?”….. I’m blushing now, so we vetoed that idea immediately (can’t give them what they want right? – got to be a little demur). The boys offered up a lot of laughs and tried to turn our chat about them into a chat about us! Which revealed that BSD is not into fat guys, cops or doughnuts… we love men that wear black eyeliner and rocknroll - BY this time we TRULY needed a cocktail….whew…..where did this chat go?? Being the rocknroll junkies/journalists that we are, we knew we had to hit them with our favorite question before we ran out of time, because we figured, if you are a true Papa Roach fan, then you already know the answers to the standard lame questions bands are usually asked……. “Who are your influences?”, “what’s your favorite city to play in” “Crue Fest or Nickelback tour?” DUHHHH! So we hit them where it counts with the most requested question from our dirt line-up:
BSD: What is the craziest thing a groupie has done to get your attention???
Much laughter erupts from all of the gentleman, but in true form of a front man, Mr. Shaddix responds for the group……..let me warn you…..this is not a nice revelation, so if you are grossed out by classless women then stop reading……….we knew you wouldn’t – just had to be a little PC right?........

Jacoby: says “the craziest shit I have ever seen, was this one time we were signing autographs outside of a show (city not named to protect the innocent, and I use the word innocent very loosely) this chick walks up to us and says ‘I love you guys can I have your autograph?’…..blah, blah, blah and so we say ‘sure’ and talk a bit and eventually she says ‘so do you guys want my autograph???’ we were like ‘ uhh sure, whatever’ next thing you know – the chick drops her pants puts our sharpie in her asshole and signs her name for us”…..What did we expect from Papa Roach??? Our response to this response “CLASSY” so Jacoby says “it was cool….those are the kind of girls we like” (laughter by all including us – could this statement be true?) You never can tell – RockNroll is a dirty job right??
All in all, meeting PR was a huge highlight for the BSD girls they were genuinely dirty rock stars that didn’t mind revealing that they are also just regular guys. The show that night was so incredible, we are ready to hit the road again to catch Papa Roach live again soon! The set list included:
Days of war, Change or die, Lifeline, Angels and Insects, Had Enough, Hollywood whore, To Be Loved, Getting Away With Murder, State of Emergency, Scars, I Thought I told you that I loved you, Forever,
Coffin, Blood Bros, Into the light, Last Resort.

An incredible set list to please any of the “mixed nuts” of Papa Roach fans in the crowd. The BSD girls’ jobs were done…..after many cocktails, we turned back into fans and rocked out to one of the best shows we have seen in months! Catch them in your city or go on a road trip – it will be worth it – trust us!
